How did you get started making jewelry?
Bario Neal started as a collaboration between designers Page Neal and Anna Bario as an artistic exploration and research project for where our jewelry materials come from and how we can lesson our environmental impact.
Did you always know you wanted to be a designer?
We always knew that we wanted to be makers and artists.
How long have you been in the trade?
Since 2008.
What does your business look like now versus when you started?
We started the business back in 2008 on credit debt and in Anna's home basement. Today, we have our flagship showroom and workshop in Philadelphia, a showroom in New York, and a team of 18.
What’s the most challenging part about being a jewelry designer?
It's a bit challenging that the materials are so expensive which can at times limit exploration.
What’s your favorite part about being a jewelry designer?
I find it thrilling to make an object that people will wear and cherish in their day to day lives.
Who is another jewelry designer that you admire/do you have a mentor in the jewelry industry?
We've always loved Polly Wales cast in place work.
Do you have a favorite piece that you have made?
There are so many spectacular pieces that we have made over the years. Narrowing it down to one is challenging. Recently the Cosmic Serpent Collection that we released in the fall has been fresh and exciting for both our clients and for us.
Do you have a favorite metal or stone that you prefer to work with?
We love 18k yellow gold and sapphires.
Do trends in the industry affect the way you design a new collection?
We try not to design around trends, however, I think trends always influence us whether we recognize it or not.
What’s your favorite piece of jewelry from your own personal collection?
All my Bario Neal stacking rings, with a particular shout out to the Sol Emerald Octagonal Ring and the Lash Triad Pariaba Ring.
